About Us

SINCE 2001

One festival. Many stories.

The Vrystaat Kunstefees • Arts Festival • Tsa-Botjhaba is one of the key arts festivals on the African continent, offering national and international work in a range of genres. The festival has been held annually for the past 23 years, making it a well-established regional event. It showcases various artistic disciplines, including visual arts, music, dance, theatre, and literature.

Our vision is centred on the principle of ‘One festival, many stories’ and is the guiding force behind our programming for the festival. Our mission is to support the development and presentation of great art in the Free State for all. We do this by bringing people together, supporting great art, developing artists and audiences, driving innovation, and playing on the world stage.

Notable highlights included theatre productions, music concerts, art installations, literary readings, open stage and busking performances. The programme showcased both established artists and emerging talents, providing a platform for artistic growth and exploration.

The festival actively engaged with the local community, offering outreach programs, educational initiatives, and workshops to promote arts education and participation. It collaborated with schools, community centres, and local organizations to involve many people in the festival’s activities.

The festival collaborates with various partners, including government bodies, arts organizations, trusts, corporate sponsors, and community stakeholders. These partnerships provide financial support, resources, and expertise to ensure the success of the festival.

The festival contributes to the cultural and economic development of Bloemfontein and the Free State region. It attracts local and international visitors, boosting tourism and the local economy. The festival continues to gain recognition within the South African arts community and has become an important platform for artists and performers over the last decade.

Ultimately, our purpose is to create a memorable and enriching experience for all who participate in the festival. We aspire to ignite imaginations, spark conversations, and leave a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of the Free State. By bringing together artists, audiences, and the community, we aim to cultivate a vibrant arts scene and contribute to developing and appreciating great art in our region.
