The Empathetic Apprentice
In this body of work that spans a decade, McGarry explores how he has become an apprentice to his empathy. The work stays with several poly-crises we face today, from genocide to ecocide. McGarry, originally an environmental scientist, who later became a cultural sociologist that specialises in queer eco-pedagogy and eco-educational sociology, uses artmaking as a scientific instrument. “I create tactile theories … I hyphenate ‘meaning-making’ to point to how meaning is something that is made and that making can inform meaning. Ideally, I would like to replace the hyphen with an infinity sign: meaning∞making. In his work spanning different media, McGarry examines how becoming an apprentice to our empathy is vital in how we might build new social tissue.
