Ashraf Jamal: Georgia O’Keeffe – Late Style
“Late Style” describes the work of artists in the final years of their lives. Ashraf Jamal, a research fellow at the University of the Free State and the 2026 Artist-in-Residence, explores how artists do not necessarily conclude their lives harmoniously but remain complex and contradictory. The idea of a linear life is challenged by rupture and disruption. Death is not simply an end, and great art questions dominant views. Georgia O’Keeffe serves as an example of the synergy between ageing and creativity.
Verken jou Nagdrome
Verken jou Nagdrome is an interactive workshop presented by Zarine Roodt that examines dreams as tools for self-reflection, emotional insight, and creativity. Inspired by Carl Gustav Jung, it focuses on dreams as messages from the unconscious and guides for growth. Participants learn basic dreamwork techniques and bring a meaningful dream for guided reflection. A practical SoulCollage activity uses images to visually express dream themes. Through creative exercises and group discussion, the session fosters self-awareness, insight, and dialogue around inner experiences and personal symbolism.
Vrystaat SpeelStories
Henning van Aswegen writes folktales and children’s stories about the Free State’s warm-hearted people and amusing little animals from his childhood along the Sand River. In VrystaatStories, we meet Mossieman and Geronkie the Donkey, who lead locals into mischievous adventures and pranks. The stories are original, humorous, and suitable for ages 8 to 80. At the festival, Henning will not only read aloud: he also brings along old toys and demonstrates them so children can see how people used to play, while learning about respect, empathy, and care.
Henning van Aswegen, born in Bloemfontein, served as a commissioned officer in the South African Defence Force and in civilian intelligence services. While studying at Potchefstroom University, he worked as a stringer for South African Associated Newspapers and later became a political correspondent for the Perskor Group. He is an intelligence historian and author, known for works such as Spioenmeesters, The Spymasters of South Africa, Die Buro, Training Intelligence Officers, and Russian Espionage in South Africa.
