Set against the harsh desert landscape of Kleinzee in the Northern Cape, Beauty for Ashes explores abandoned diamond mines once operated by De Beers and Anglo American. Residents now occupy these sites through self-organised cooperatives, digging for diamonds with makeshift tools and knowledge passed down from elders who once worked in the mines. Their struggle for survival reflects South Africa’s serious unemployment crisis and connects to wider debates about decolonising natural resources, land ownership, and the contested call for land reform.
