Theo Neethling has been a professor in the Department of Political Studies and Governance at the University of the Free State since April 1, 2009. He also served as the head of the department from 2009 to 2020. He earned an MA degree from the then Potchefstroom University (now North-West University) in 1989, and a DLitt et Phil degree from the University of South Africa in 1992, both in international politics. After a six-year tenure in the then Department of Political Development in Pretoria, he joined the University of Stellenbosch’s Faculty of Military Science (Military Academy) in 1996. There, he advanced to professor and served as chairperson of the Department of Political Science (Military) from 2003 to early 2009, until he took up a position at the University of the Free State. Neethling is the author, and co-author in some cases, of over 200 published outputs in scientific and popular-scientific publications, including 70 articles in accredited scientific journals and 23 chapters in professional books. He has also delivered over 80 research presentations at national and international academic conferences. In this regard, his projects have taken him to foreign governments and academic institutions across all five African regions, Asia, Australasia, Europe, and North America. He has also served as a visiting lecturer abroad on several occasions and served on the editorial boards of various academic publications. Since 2009, he has been recognised by the National Research Foundation as a rated researcher.
