Die uitvaart

Are we truly prepared for death? Renowned crime writer Carla van der Spuy has explored the scientific, psychological, emotional, and practical aspects surrounding death, speaking with numerous people involved in the process, including pastors, oncology nurses, and funeral directors; she also interviewed a forensic pathologist who has performed over 10,000 autopsies. A death doula explains what her work involves, volunteers talk about how they uniquely support parents of stillborn babies, and the difference between assisted death and the withdrawal and withholding of life-sustaining treatment is discussed in-depth. Carla also investigates certain macabre traditions surrounding death and why TikToks of funerals are becoming increasingly popular.

Carla van der Spuy is an award-winning freelance journalist and author who has written eight books (mostly true crime nonfiction), several of which became bestsellers and have been translated into English. Her previous books include Mens of Monster (2012), Plaasmoorde (2014), Bloed op haar hande (2015), Mishandel, Misbruik, Misken: Joey Haarhoff was my Ma and Liefde agter Tralies (2019).
