Hunger Count
To raise awareness about food security, artist Carin Bester will spend five days extracting 153,960 beans or corn kernels – symbolising 6% of the millions of households in the country that go hungry. Festivalgoers can participate by extracting 100 kernels each, contributing to different piles of kernels that will represent statistics on food insecurities. In this way, Bester aims to encourage people to reflect on their food consumption and waste. Funds donated by festivalgoers during the installation will be given to a local organisation providing food to households experiencing food shortages. The visual impact of Hunger Count will hopefully inspire people to change their habits and contribute to alleviating hunger.
