Sashiko, directly translated, means “little stabs” or “small running”. This Japanese art form uses little stitches in straight lines, symbols, motives, or randomly to create art and reinforcement. It serves as functional embroidery. Through the form in which the stitches are worked, the “kami” or “spirit” is transferred to the wearer of the garment or owner of the project. Thus, the different patterns in which Sashiko is done represent different meanings, such as good health, prosperity, steadfastness, etc. Traditional Sashiko was used to reinforce points of wear or to repair worn places or tears with patches. Come and learn the beautiful art of Sashiko!
